5.9 earthquake in Iran: Five people killed, more than 300 injured

On Friday night, tremors were triggered by severe earthquake in northwestern Iran. There have been reports of heavy damage from the earthquake. Sixty-five people died from the earthquake, while more than 300 were injured.

The quake struck at 1:17 a.m. local time, with a magnitude 5.9 magnitude recorded. The epicenter was the epicenter of the earthquake near the town of Tabriz 120 km from the capital Tehran. Earthquake has also been experienced in Azerbaijan.

According to the Iranian agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was eight km deep in the ground. There were also five severe aftershocks of the earthquake. According to local media, rescue operations have been started in 41 villages after the earthquake, with the two areas having the highest damage.

A total of 340 people have been hospitalized due to injuries, out of which 17 have been discharged. The earthquake has caused 40 houses to collapse, leaving 100 people trapped in the debris that have been rescued and evacuated. In addition, more than 200 cattle were killed.

Relief camps have been started in 78 villages. People ran out of the house after experiencing an earthquake. With immediate effect, the supply of electricity and gas was also stopped. People spent the night warming up on the edge of the highway.

After the earthquake, the US Geological Survey warned that the likelihood of damage to lives and goods due to the earthquake is immense. Iran's geographical location is at the site where two tectonic plates are found, causing frequent earthquakes here.
