Unique practice of locking Mataji at this temple in Kanpur in Navratri

During the Navratri, the goddess worships devotees, incense and prasad in the temple, but during the Navratri, devotees offer gifts of gold and silver locks at the Mahakali temple in Mohalpur area of Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur. Every year more than 5 locks are collected during Navratri. The lock is found near an iron net near the Mahakali statue.

On how this tradition came to be, people believe that once a devotee of Durga Mata was falsely accused of theft and murder. Thus the temple priest closed the service worship by locking the door next to the idol of God. This step was taken to ensure that the innocent devotee is not punished. Months after the devotees of Durga Mata's devotion got rid of it, the priest of the temple opened the lock and started worship and prayer. From then on, the gift of locksmith in the temple began. The devotees believe that accepting the gift of locks doesn't hurt. In the ordinary days, there is the gift of a locksmith, while in Navratri, gold and silver are locked. During Navratri, thousands of people come to see this unique temple.
