Justice Bobday may become the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

SA Bobde is likely to be appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The next Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who is retiring next month, has written a letter to the central government recommending that Justice Bobday be made the Chief Justice.

Traditionally, the retired Chief Justice recommends the government to appoint him as his successor. Justice Bobday is currently second in seniority. He has previously been Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

His full name is Sharad Arvind Bobde. He was born in 1956 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. In 1978 he was elected to the Bar Council of Maharashtra.

He practiced as a lawyer in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. He became the Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court in 2000. He was then appointed Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

He became a Supreme Court judge in 2013. Justice Bobday is due to retire on April 23, 2021.
