83-year-old veteran left leader Gurudas Dasgupta passes away

Veteran left leader Gurudas Dasgupta passed away this morning. Gurudas, 83, has been suffering from lung cancer for some time now.

Gurudas was twice a Rajya Sabha member. Indian Communist Party Secretary Swapan Banerjee said that at six o'clock this morning, Gurudas took his last breath at his Kolkata residence. After the cancer was diagnosed, he lost most of the party's responsibility. However, the party's national executive membership continued.

He has a wife and a daughter in the family. In 1985, Gurudas first became a Rajya Sabha member. He then contested the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1994 after becoming a Rajya Sabha member twice and went to the Lok Sabha as the winner.

In 2009, he won again in the Lok Sabha elections and became an MP. This time he was also elected as the leader of the Left Party in the Lok Sabha.

Sadgat Dasgupta had a keen interest in Indian music and cricket.
