After 23 years of hard work by the Indian Vegetable Research Institute, it has finally been able to develop a new species of sheep 'Kashi Lalima'. The red pigment is packed with various nutrients including antioxidants, iron and calcium.

The Indian Vegetable Research Institute (IIRR), located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, has been successful in developing the red-colored species of Kashi Lalima.

Such scales were so prevalent in Western countries till date and were imported into India. Different species of 'Kashi Lalima' sheep have been reported to be priced between Rs 100 to Rs 500 per kg.

With the success of developing the 'Kashi Lalima' breed of sheep, Indian farmers can now produce it as well. The organization will make such seed seeds available to the general public in December.

Production of such scales full of different nutrients will benefit Indian farmers and provide the general public with suitable alternatives for supplementing various nutrients.

Former Director of the Institute In 1995-96, under the chairmanship of Bijendra, work was started on developing red beetle species and under his guidance, 'Kashi Lalima' has been successful.

In developing this species of sheep, Dr. SK Sanwal, Dr. GP Mishra and Technical Assistant Subhash Chandra also made important contributions. The scales of this species, which have developed after 23 years of hard work, are reddish-red and have a length of 11-14 cm while the diameter is 1.5 to 1.6 cm.
