Supermarket Food Responsible for Obesity Problems in Africa

Johannesburg, Ta. September 22, 2019, Sunday

Once upon a time, people from African countries, known for their poverty and hunger, have suffered the problem of overweight. That's why 8 of the top 20 countries with the fastest growing obesity problem in the world are from Africa. These countries of Africa include Libya, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, Namibia and Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Libya and Egypt have the highest obesity rate of 30%, while South Africa has 28.3% overweight. The health of the lower and middle class people, especially in the smaller cities, worsens due to overweight. Many middle-class people are starting to emphasize processed food sold in the supermarket, with high levels of sugar and fat, rather than having meals at home.

In South Africa, the government has increased the tax on soft drinks by increasing the consumption of sugary and high-calorie soft drinks, thus reducing its consumption. According to one study, more deaths occur because of overweight than under weight.

Overweight more than two billion people worldwide

The World Health Organization believes that over 2 billion people in the world are overweight, which accounts for 30 percent of the world's total population. Obesity problems have increased 3-fold in the last 40 years. The health hazards posed by excessive fat accumulation in the body are considered overweight. The accumulation of fat content on the waist, hands, feet and stomach causes diabetes, heart disease kidney and digestive tract diseases. The number of diabetes patients in Africa has increased by 129 percent since 1980. The illness has cost the US $ 60 billion in financial burden.
