A total of 17400 prisoners, including 4,000 raw work in Tihar Jail

Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been kept in Tihar, Asia's largest prison. The jail has 16 sub-jails. The prison currently houses a total of 17400 inmates, including 14,000 raw work prisoners. As of December 31, 2018, there were 14938 male prisoners and 530 female prisoners in Tihar Jail. Which was 2.02 percent higher than at December 31, 2017.

The number of raw work inmates increased by 1.67 percent in 2018 compared to 2017. While the number of convicted prisoners has increased by 2.23 percent. So far, many high profile people have been kept in Tihar Jail.

In Tihar Jail, the late Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi, JNUSU leader Kanhaiyakumar, RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav, businessman Subrata Roy, gangster Chhota Rajan and Charles Shobhraj, social activist Anna Hazare and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejri were also present. Besides, the accused in the controversial Nirbhaya gangrepe case have also been kept in Tihar jail.
