12 killed, several missing after boat overturned in Godavari river

At least 12 people were killed when a boat sank on Sunday afternoon in the Godavari river near Devipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. As many as 30 people were missing in the water while 24 were rescued due to the sinking boat carrying about 61 people.

The accident occurred after a boat carrying passengers was sinking in the eastern Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It was learned that there were about 11 crew members and about 50 passengers aboard the boat. The boat sailed from Papikondalu, the presidential tourist destination, and sank near Kachhaluru.

The state government directed the help of helicopters to find those who were submerged in the water. In addition, two NDRF teams with 30 members were deployed for rescue work. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed all the ministers of the district to monitor rescue operations at the incident site. At the same time, the families of all the deceased were ordered to pay Rs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sadness over the incident via Twitter. Due to heavy rains over the last few days, the river was overflowing and floods were flooded during the accident. Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered NDRF and SDRF to deploy additional forces to protect the tourists. In addition, it was ordered to postpone all boating facilities in the area.
