The situation in Haiti is out of control: Gangsters are looting openly: More than hundreds are dead.
- There is no Indian Embassy in Haiti : there is one in the Dominican Republic
- More than 15,000 people have been left homeless in the island nation: Widespread chaos is spreading in the capital Port of Prince itself.
Port of Prince: The situation in Haiti, an island nation located in the Caribbean Sea, has become unmanageable. In the capital Port of Prince itself on Monday morning armed bandits started sudden attacks in the capital and surrounding areas. So today, on Monday itself, more than 12 people have been reported to have been killed.
Apart from the capital, the armed robbers also ransacked houses in Lambube and Thomson. Hence people had to flee from their homes. Some people made announcements on radio stations and sought police help, but that help came too late and too little. By then the dacoits had settled their work.
Before this, on 29th February too, bandits had looted. At the time, a photojournalist saw the bodies of at least 12 men lying on the road in Parisonville, which borders Laboude and Thomson districts. In short, a civil war-like situation is prevailing in Haiti. These bandits had set a police post on fire a few days ago and targeted two of the biggest jails in the country.
In fact, armed clashes have started in the country with the movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
About 90 Indians are currently living in Haiti. India does not have an embassy in Haiti but does have an embassy in the nearby island nation of the Dominican Republic. This embassy takes care of Indians based in Haiti. It is now making arrangements to evacuate the 75-90 Indians there to a safe place if required.
