Silchar, Ta. 30 June 2022, Thursday

Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in Assam due to heavy rains. 22 districts of the state have been inundated and 2,254 villages and more than 21 lakh people are suffering from the floods. About 2 lakh people have become homeless and have taken refuge in relief camps opened by the state government.

Speaking of the city of Silchar, the Bilpar area of the city is flooded by 8-10 feet of water. The flooding of houses has increased the hardships of the people and the water is moving so fast that it is becoming dangerous for people to stand in the water.

The first floor of the house is submerged

The devastation is so widespread in some areas that water is flowing from people's homes. The first floors of several houses in the low-lying areas of Silchar, a city of about 2 lakh people, 320 km from the capital Guwahati, have been submerged. People are also having difficulty in eating and drinking in the situation that has arisen due to the return of flood waters for the last 10 days.

People are waiting for help

Water is flowing from the roofs of people's expensive cars in the affluent areas of the city and the first floor of their houses is waterlogged. The NDRF's go-to whistle for relief and rescue work means people pull down rope-tied bags from their homes so they can get clean drinking water and something to eat.

Corpses are floating in the water

Several videos are going viral on social media in which it can be seen that the corpse is being floated in the water. The water is all around and the cemetery is completely submerged so people are forced to throw the body into the water instead of burying it.

A woman's body was found floating in the water a few days ago and was later cremated by local volunteers. The woman's son allegedly left a note with the body, saying he could not attend his mother's funeral as the Rangirkhari area was flooded. He also requested for his mother's funeral. The water is flowing so fast outside the house that people cannot take the risk of getting out.

People forced to drink dirty water

There is also a shortage of drinking water due to the return of flood waters. People are thirsty for food as well as water. The NDRF's move also gives the victims a small bottle of medicine along with relief. People are being advised to purify the water by adding a bottle of liquid to 20 liters of water and drink it.

Bones are also broken in the same stream of water

"Despite being an urban area, the floods are so fast that it has become difficult to stand still," said an NDRF jawan. The flow of water is so fast that it can break a person's bones. Efforts are being made to save the people by cutting off the roofs. For the second time in 38 years, floods have caused such a catastrophe and it will take months to recover from the damage.

People are also finding it difficult to take sick members of the family to the hospital and there is a risk of death at home and even going out can lead to floods.
