Biden's authority over the power plant's environmental standards

- The reverse attitude of the American Supreme Court in the fight against climate change

Washington, Ta. 02 July 2022, Saturday

The U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark decision has banned certain powers of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Supreme Court's decision is a major setback for President Joe Biden's climate plans.

The EPA was filed by West Virginia from Republican-led states and some of the nation's largest coal companies. The petition argued that the agency did not have the authority to limit emissions across the provinces.

The Supreme Court, while dealing a major blow to the fight against climate change, questioned how the country's major air pollution laws could be used to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide from power plants.

The Supreme Court said the Clean Air Act does not give the Environmental Protection Agency the broader authority to control the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming from power plants.

The court's decision could be difficult for the Biden administration's plans to tackle climate change. A proposal to control emissions from power plants is expected by the end of the year. Biden is committed to halving the country's greenhouse gas emissions by the end of this decade and becoming an emissions-free energy sector by 2035.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision limits the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to control climate pollution caused by power plants. It also indicates that the court is prepared to block Biden and other federal agencies' efforts to limit climate change emissions from oil, gas and coal.
