UP: Doctors who prescribe branded drugs instead of generics will be prosecuted

- The health department has received many complaints of prescription of branded medicine by doctors. This order has been issued for this reason.

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken an important decision. In UP, doctors can no longer prescribe branded drugs instead of generics at any cost. The medical and health department has clearly instructed all doctors not to write the brand name of the drug but to write their salt.

Deputy CM and Health Minister Brijesh Pathak on Tuesday directed medical and health department officials to use generic drugs in government and government-aided hospitals. Brijesh Pathak issued the order in a serious move on doctors prescribing branded drugs instead of generic drugs in government hospitals.

The list of medicines has to be displayed in the hospitals.

As per the order issued by the health department, all the hospitals have been asked to display the list of available medicines. Now doctors will not be able to prescribe medicine from outside even if they want to. In such cases, medicines can now be taken from the Jan Aushadhi Kendra.

CM Brijesh Pathak said the decision was taken in the public interest. If there is no medicine in the hospital and the doctor prescribes an outside medicine, they will be able to write the name of the salt instead of the brand name. Doctors will be prosecuted if they are seen prescribing outside medicines.

The patient can buy generic medicine from the Jan Aushadhi Kendra of the government hospital. If the doctor does not follow this order, he will be prosecuted.

According to the information received, the health department has received many complaints of doctors prescribing branded medicine. This is why this order has been issued. Mohan Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Treatment and Health, issued the order on Tuesday evening.

What is the difference between generic drugs and branded drugs

In fact any medicine for any disease is a kind of chemical salt but when a brand makes it give it its own name. Where generic medicines for diseases like cold-cough, fever are available at Rs 1-2 per tablet while consumers have to pay several times the price for branded ones.
