A state-run shipping company has begun shipping the first consignment of Russian-made goods to India using a new trade corridor across the Islamic Republic, an Iranian port official said. The new trend corridor has been tested to make sure the war between Ukraine and Russia does not adversely affect trade. Let me tell you, Russian Cargo has two 40-foot (12.192 m) containers made of wooden laminate sheets that weigh 41 tons.

The cargo left St. Petersburg for the Caspian Sea port. This information was given on Saturday by Darish Jamali, director of the Iranian-Russian terminal jointly owned in Astrakhan, by an Iranian-run news agency.

However, the report did not specify when the cargo to test the corridor, which it described as an initial "pilot" transfer, was shipped or what type of goods were in the shipment. The cargo will cross the Caspian length from Astrakhan to the northern Iranian port of Anjali and will be transported by road to the southern port of Port Abbas in the Persian Gulf, IRNA said. From there it will be loaded onto a ship and shipped to the Indian port of Nhava Sheva.

The import is being coordinated and managed by the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping License Group and its regional offices in Russia and India, and is expected to take 25 days, Darish Jamali said.

Due to the war with Ukraine, sanctions have been imposed on Russia. In such a scenario, Iranian officials are eager to resume a stalled project to develop a north-south transit corridor that would use Iran to connect Russia to Asian export markets. The plan eventually involves the construction of a railroad line that could carry cargo from Iranian ports in the Caspian Sea to the southeastern port of Chabahar.
