A spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that "the international community respects and tolerates all religions." The remarks by former Pakistani national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and the party's Delhi unit media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal against a Pakistani journalist against the Prophet Mohammad were met with criticism from several Muslim countries. His spokesman Stephane Dujarric made the statement in response.

"I have seen news related to this," Dujarric told a daily press conference on Monday. I have also seen the comments. I can tell you that we strongly encourage respect and tolerance towards all religions.

Controversial remarks against the Prophet Mohammad have been opposed by many Muslim countries. Meanwhile, the BJP on Sunday suspended Sharma and ousted Jindal.

Earlier, Qatar, Iran and Kuwait met Indian ambassadors on Sunday over the BJP leader's controversial remarks about the Prophet Mohammad. Key Gulf states have objected to the remarks.

Amid protests from the Muslim community over the remarks, the BJP slammed the two leaders, saying they respect all religions and do not accept insults from people of any religion.

Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Afghanistan also joined the ranks of countries that condemned the controversial remarks against the Prophet Mohammad and stressed the importance of respecting all religious beliefs.
