Media Center avoids publishing advertisements of online betting platforms

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday advised print , electronic and digital media to refrain from publishing advertisements for online betting platforms, saying betting and gambling were illegal in most parts of the country and posed significant financial and socio-economic risk to consumers.

The ministry said the directive was issued after a number of cases of online betting websites surfaced in print , electronic , social and online media.

The ministry has advised print and electronic media to refrain from advertising online betting platforms. The ministry has advised online and social media, including online advertising moderators and publishers, not to publish such advertisements in India.

Betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of the country and pose the greatest financial and socio-economic risk to consumers, especially youth and children, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry further said that such advertisements have given impetus to such illegal activities on a large scale.
