The Union Home Ministry has asked the police chiefs of the states and union territories to be ready and vigilant as they too are likely to be targeted during the violence. The ministry took the step in the wake of widespread violence in several cities across the country on Friday in the wake of the Prophet's controversy.

The possibility of a paramilitary force being deployed

A senior ministry official said police in all states and union territories had been asked to remain vigilant as they too could be attacked during the violence. "There are deliberate attempts to disrupt peace and order in the country," an official said. He also said that if necessary, police as well as paramilitary forces would be deployed.

Point to keep an eye on the chaotic elements

Police have been instructed to keep an eye on elements who make provocative speeches. State police have also been asked to identify those who posted live videos of the violence and provocative speeches. The police will take necessary action against such people.

Crowds attack police

Muslim groups took to the streets across the country after Friday prayers in protest of remarks made about the Prophet Mohammad and the arrest of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, who were suspended from the BJP. Violent demonstrations by them created an atmosphere of chaos. Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, has witnessed the most violent protests in which several policemen have been injured. A young man was killed and more than two dozen people were injured when a mob pelted him with stones and opened fire on police and rioters. Eight of them have been shot.
