Gupta brothers arrested in UAE for corruption in South Africa


- There is so much anger among the general public over the Gupta family with Zuma that slogans of Gupta Must Fall are being raised on the streets of Johannesburg.

Gupta businessman, an Indian businessman accused of corruption in South Africa, has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates. The South African government said on Monday that law enforcement officials in the UAE had arrested Rajesh Gupta and Atul Gupta of the Gupta family. Interpol issued a Red Corner Notice against both. The South African government is working to extradite the two.

The Gupta Brothers moved to South Africa from Saharanpur in search of a business opportunity about 24 years ago. His business spread so much that he is now one of the top ten richest business families in the country. But he has always been accused of being close to Zuma and of pursuing business for political gain.

An investigative report on corruption in South Africa has confirmed that The News Age, a newspaper owned by the Gupta Brothers, who fled the country after looting billions of rupees from government undertakings, was helped by the influence of former President Jacob Zuba.

Ajay, Atul and Rajesh, three Gupta brothers originally from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, started TNA, which is now closed. The three brothers lived in Dubai. Authorities in South Africa have demanded his extradition so that criminal charges against him can be heard.

What other allegations are there against Gupta Brothers?

Among the many allegations of financial corruption against him, the main one is that he has embezzled millions of dollars from the exchequer for the beauty of a private house in addition to helping the Gupta brothers unrestrainedly. He survived an impeachment motion against him in Parliament but his party did worse than expected from opinion polls, which saw them at gaining about a third of the support. The general public is so angry with the Zuma Gupta family that slogans of Gupta Must Fall are being chanted on the streets of Johannesburg.
