FIR registered against 2, state of tension after offensive social media post in Nagpur

- Police patrolling has been increased as part of precaution keeping in view the situation

Tensions have risen over an offensive social media post in Kamati, Maharashtra. A crowd of people had gathered outside the police station. A case was then registered against a woman and a man. Police patrols have been stepped up as part of precautionary measures in view of the situation. Police forces have also been deployed to control the riots. Police have urged people to keep the peace.

The incident took place in Kamati town, about 20 km from Nagpur city. Several members of a community gathered outside the New Kamati police station and demanded action against the two men for allegedly posting abusive language on social media, officials said Monday. The woman shared a message on a WhatsApp group allegedly defaming a religion, an official at the New Kamti Police Station said. The man wrote a message in support of the woman on another social media platform.

The whole incident has created a tense situation in Kamati. Several members of one community gathered outside the New Kamati police station and demanded strict action against the two. A senior police officer immediately rushed to the spot and calmed down the angry crowd. A case has been registered against both of them in connection with the post made late on Saturday night, he said. Police patrols have been stepped up in Kamati to maintain law and order. Police have urged people to keep the peace.

The incident comes at a time when BJP leader Nupur Sharma's controversial remarks about the Prophet Mohammad have sparked reports of protests, vandalism, violence and tensions in many parts of the country. Violent protests erupted in about 12 cities after Friday prayers.
