Karachi: A Hindu temple has once again been targeted in Pakistan. Statues of gods and goddesses have been vandalized at a Hindu temple in the neighboring city of Karachi. Violence against minority places of worship is on the rise in Pakistan. Statues of gods and goddesses were attacked on Wednesday at the Shri Mari Mata temple in Korangi area of Karachi.

According to The Express Tribune, the incident has created fear in the Hindu community in Karachi. However, a large number of police forces have been deployed in the Korangi area to prevent any untoward incident. Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot and inspected the temple. Sanjeev, a Hindu resident of the area, said the temple was attacked by six to eight people on a motorcycle in the morning. It is not known why these people attacked the temple.

Police have registered a case against strangers in the incident. Korangi SHO Farooq Sanjarani confirmed that five to six unidentified persons broke into the temple and vandalized it and then fled. Their search continues. An investigation is also underway to find out the cause of the demolition of the temple. According to the FIR lodged at Korangi police station, five men came on a motorcycle late on Wednesday night and interrogated the caretaker. The suspects, noting that the caretaker was not present, smashed the idols of the gods and goddesses and started throwing stones. Anti-social elements threatened temple workers to flee the scene. Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police Faisal Bashir Mann said the temple was built inside the hall of a house in the area and reconstruction work was underway there. Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui, a spokesman for the Sindh government and an adviser to the chief minister, tweeted that the criminals would not be released. The temple will be repaired.

However, temples of minority Hindus in Pakistan are often the victims of mob violence. Also in October last year, a historic temple on the banks of the river Indus in Kotri was allegedly desecrated by unknown persons. Police launched the operation soon after the news of the incident went viral on social media. Apart from this, in August last year, dozens of people allegedly vandalized a Hindu temple in Bhog city. The vandalism is said to have taken place in protest of a local court granting bail to an eight-year-old Hindu boy who allegedly urinated in a local madrassa.
