By 2050-50, the number of contract (Gig) employees in India will increase to 2.5 crore

The number of Gig employeesworking on a fixed salary for a fixed period of time is likely to increase to 25 million by 205-30 in India. In the year 2020-21, the number of such employees was 3 lakh.

This estimate has been expressed in a report of the Policy Commission released on Monday. The report recommends increasing social security for Gig employees and their families working on a contract basis.

According to a report titled ' India's Fast Growing Gig and Platform Economy ', the number of Gig employees is expected to reach 6.5 per cent of the non-agricultural workforce and 5.1 per cent of India's total livelihood by 2050-50.

Gig employees are broadly classified into platform and non-platform employees. The work of platform employees is based on an online software app or digital platform while non-platform gig employees are usually daily paid workers who work part time or full time.

Gig employees mostly prefer a flexible work schedule and have a low to middle education. The income from gig work is not their primary income and they always do regular jobs as well.

According to the report of the policy commission, 4 lakh employees were involved in the gig economy in 2020-21. These employees were mostly in the retail trade and sales and transportation sectors. He also played a significant role in infrastructure and finance and insurance activities.
