Beijing, Ta. 04 February 2022 Friday
With the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics fast approaching, the world's first self-driving high-speed train is already in operation, transporting athletes and officials between the two major cities, the historic Beijing-Zhangjiakou Intercity Railway.
Built in 2019, the station is some distance from the entrance to Bedling, the most popular compartment of the centuries-old wall. The railway line and the station attached to it were dug deep underground to prevent structural damage to the prestigious monument.
With a depth of 102 meters below the ground and covering an area of more than 36000 square meters, the three-story structure is said to be the deepest and largest underground high-speed railway station in the world.
Construction of such a complex station under the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes a 12 km long tunnel system. No easy achievement.
According to Chinese state media, engineers used an electronic detonator to detonate explosives up to a millisecond. This was the first time technology had been used in China and workers were allowed to create vibration velocities below 0.2 centimeters per second.
