Sri Lanka is on the verge of bankruptcy, forcing people to buy 100-100 grams of milk and vegetables

Colombo, Ta. 04 January 2020 Tuesday

The start of the new year has been like a nightmare for Sri Lanka. Although history cannot be changed by changing the date, coming from 31st December to 1st January cannot be a reason for change.

The past is directly related to the present. The economic crisis that has plagued Sri Lanka for the past few years has now taken a terrible turn and is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Sri Lanka is about half the area of Tamil Nadu. The population is about two and a half crores. The tourism sector contributes more than 10% to Sri Lanka's GDP.

The Kovid epidemic first wiped out tourism and the rest is being paid off by China's debt. The assumption about China is true that it traps weak countries through debt diplomacy and then makes policies in that country at its own expense.

Sri Lanka's economic crisis is turning into a serious humanitarian crisis. Inflation is rising to record levels. Food items are also getting out of reach of people. The treasury is almost empty. No wonder Sri Lanka is declared bankrupt in 2022.
