The estimated cost of construction of the new Parliament House could increase by about Rs 282 crore. It has reached Rs 1,250 crore with an estimated 29 per cent increase in estimated cost following changes in the construction plan, compliance with Supreme Court directives and some additional works. It is learned that the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has sought in-principle approval from the Lok Sabha Secretariat for the revised estimated expenditure.

The department recently shared cost information and work progress details with a 5-member panel. The government has formed this panel to monitor the ongoing works under the Mega Central Vista project.

Tata gets contract

Tata Projects has received a Rs 977 crore project to build a new Parliament building and 40 per cent of the work has been completed so far. The government has set a deadline of October 2022 for the winter session to be held in the new building.

Delhi is in Zone-4 but the building is being constructed as per the criteria for Zone-5 to provide more strength against earthquakes. This is one of the reasons why the cost has gone up. Apart from that, the cost has also increased due to the connectivity from the Parliament House to the proposed accommodation of the Prime Minister and the proposed chambers of the MPs through the tunnel. All of this was not included in the initial cost estimates.

Separate provision has also been made for state-of-the-art audio-video system in both the Houses of Parliament. Expenses have also increased due to some changes in the meeting room, chamber of ministers.
