U.P. in Lakhimpur Khiri violence case. The government is on its knees before the Supreme Court

Urge replacement of all investigating officers

An investigation by the state police will be overseen by a judge appointed by the Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government was forced to appear before the Supreme Court in a case of violence against farmers near Lakhimpur Khiri during a farmers' protest, as the apex court had raised serious concerns over the ongoing probe by the Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT). .

The apex court had directed the Uttar Pradesh government to keep a close watch on the investigations being carried out by the SIT appointed by the Uttar Pradesh government.

The Uttar Pradesh government agreed with the apex court's suggestion, as there was no question of non-compliance, as if it did not, it would prove that its ACIT probe was not fair and impartial. A total of eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the violence at Lakhimpur Khiri on October 3.

Noting that the Uttar Pradesh government had agreed, the apex court had issued a stern warning that the officers included in the existing SIT were of lower rank and directed the state government to suggest the names of some IPS officers for the probe.

The apex court had also clarified that the names of IPS officers suggested by the state government should be from Uttar Pradesh cadre but they should not be from Uttar Pradesh.
