The new electricity bill will allow companies to charge customers

New Delhi, Dt
The winter session of Parliament is starting in the country from Monday. The government is preparing to introduce a new electricity bill this session. The bill would allow electricity companies to charge customers on a cost basis. Against this the government will transfer the subsidy directly to the consumer's account on the basis of slab like cooking gas. This bill is likely to increase the price of electricity in the country by 50 paise per unit.
The central government will introduce a new electricity bill in the winter session of Parliament. With this bill, the government will take drastic steps to curb power theft. For this it will be mandatory to install electricity meters. At present, there are 12 lakh agricultural consumers in Maharashtra who are provided electricity without meters and are given an average bill. With the implementation of the new law, electricity is likely to go up by 50 paise per unit.
Through the new bill, the government wants to bring out the power companies that have gone into the pits. At present, the losses of power distribution companies have crossed Rs 20,000 crore. The companies' arrears on DISCOM are estimated at Rs 2,000 crore. Discom is delayed in getting subsidy from the government, which puts the power distribution companies in trouble. At present, consumers are eligible for subsidy, but in the near future, the government wants to limit subsidy on electricity to those in need, just like cooking gas. As a result, the government plans to deposit the subsidy directly into the consumer's account based on the slab in the new bill.
In addition, the new bill would stop political parties from promising free electricity to farmers. Due to such promises of political parties, farmers do not pay their electricity bills. This tradition is going on in many states of the country. It also hurts the government's revenue. With free electricity, on the other hand, farmers are running day and night irrigation pumps to produce more crops than they need, which the government does not want to buy.
At present, the central government has more storage than the buffer stock of wheat. In Punjab, Haryana, due to over-harvesting of crops, the grain is exposed and the crop is ruined due to heavy rains.
