Mumbai: Anand Teltumbde, the elder brother of Milind Teltumbde, the supreme commander of the Naxalites who were killed in a clash with police commando force C-60 in Gadchiroli forest on Saturday, and Milind's wife Angela Sontakke are also closely associated with the Naxalite movement.

Anand Teltumbde is one of the accused in the much-discussed Elgar Council case. Opposing Anand's bail application earlier this year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said that Milind had joined the Maoist movement and sought to expand it. The court rejected Anand's bail application.

Witness statements revealed that Milind was expanding the Maoist movement in urban areas with the help of his cousin Anand Teltumbde. Anand was in constant touch with Milind and a group meeting was also held between them.

Anand Teltumbde, a mechanical engineer, was a student of IIM-Ahmedabad and did his PhD in frontier sciences like cyber networking. He was also a Professor at IIT-Kharagpur and Goa Institute of Management.

According to the NIA, Anand was attending international meetings of the Maoists. Anand met Milind during his visits to urban areas and used to pass on the Maoist literature he had obtained from international meetings.

Milind, a senior commander of the banned CPI (Maoist), had a bounty of Rs 50 lakh on his head. He often admitted that his brother Anand had inspired him to join the Maoist movement. He often discussed with his brother the justice of the Naxalite movement in the forests and in the cities.

Meanwhile, Milind Teltumbde's wife Angela Sontak was also booked for 45 offenses against the Naxals. Angela was arrested on April 25, 2011. Her bail application was rejected by the High Court in April 2013 on the ground that the allegations against her were substantiated. But in 2016, the Supreme Court granted him bail.
