The death toll in the last two days in Bihar's Gopalganj and West Champaran districts has been steadily rising. Eight people were killed at Betiya village in Champaran on Thursday while 16 people were reported dead at Gopalganj. However, the cause of death has not yet been ascertained by the administration in both the districts.

This is the third death due to alcohol consumption in northern Bihar in the last 10 days. Bihar Minister Janak Ram had visited Gopalganj in connection with the massacre. He informed that he himself had visited the families of those who died due to fake liquor. At the same time, the NDA expressed the possibility that it could be a conspiracy to discredit the government.

Police say some of those killed have been cremated by their families. Four people died during treatment on Thursday and two died on the way to hospital. Police have arrested 4 people in the case and the case is being investigated by 3 teams.

More than 20 people in the case were of Scheduled Castes and allegedly drank fake liquor being sold by local traders. Between January and October 31 this year, about 70 people died in Nawada, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Siwan and Rohtas districts due to consumption of counterfeit liquor and many others lost their sight.
