Within hours of Facebook shutting down, Telegram had grown to 70 million users

New Delhi: With Facebook shutting down for seven hours on Monday, the number of Telegram users increased by 70 million. Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, said that after being shut down for about six hours, many people around the world left it and joined Telegram.

The outage affected more than three and a half billion users of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Facebook blamed the faulty configuration change for this. "We welcome 70 million homeless users on other social media platforms," Durov said in his telegram channel. "I congratulate him on the sudden increase in our team," Durov said.

He said that the reason for such a large increase in the number of Telegram users is the uninterrupted and flawless service it provides. He said some users in the US have turned to telegrams as they feel their speed is slowing down on other social media.

He further added that I urge every Telegram user to welcome every new user and help him to use it. Make sure he sticks to it. This will show why Telegram is ahead in the competition.

"Even though millions of users in the United States signed up for our service, our speed did not slow down for most users," Durov said. Telegram users have been on the rise since protests around the world against WhatsApp's new privacy policy. The number of Telegram users has crossed 16 crore.
