Why do people in this village in Uttarakhand celebrate Diwali by burning grass?

Dehradun, October 29, 2021.Friday

Diwali is celebrated differently in the rural areas of Chamoli Devbhmi in the state of Uttarakhand. Especially in the forest area where pine tree husks and dry grass under it are collected to light a fire. Women and children witness this tradition passed down from generation to generation.

The most surprising thing is that the men are divided into two groups, the young and the old. Through this unique tradition, the villagers convey the message of environmental protection. However, as this is a tradition, care is taken not to start a forest fire or burn a tree. Due to this practice, whenever there is a forest fire, the villagers reach out to put it out. In this way this tradition has proved to be very useful. On the day of Diwali in Jakhani village, the youth living in the city also come to participate in this tradition
