Wholesale inflation fell to 10.66 per cent in September: a six-month low


Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), eased to 10.66 per cent in September on account of lower food prices. Which is a six-month low. Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), declined in September, despite rising crude oil prices.

Prices of mineral oil, basic metals, non-food articles, food products, crude petroleum, natural gas, chemicals and chemical products rose in September, 2021, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. As of August, 2021, inflation was 11.39 per cent. While in September, 2020 it was 1.32 per cent.

Food inflation fell for the fifth month in a row. Food prices fell 4.69 per cent in September. In August, 2021, food prices fell by 1.29 per cent. Prices of vegetables declined while pulses became dearer by 9.42 per cent, eggs, meat and fish by 5.18 per cent.

In September, 2021, prices of vegetables fell by 32.45 per cent, onions by 1.91 per cent and potatoes by 48.95 per cent. However, in September, 2021, fuel and electricity prices rose by 24.91 per cent. In August, 2021, the prices of these two increased by 26.09 per cent. Inflation in crude petroleum and natural gas rose to 43.92 per cent in September, 2021 and 40.03 per cent in August, 2021.
