Wholesale inflation eased to 10.5 per cent in September, a six-month low

Wholesale price inflation eased to 10.2 per cent in September on account of lower food prices. Which is a six-month low. September saw a decline in wholesale price-based inflation despite rising crude oil prices.

However, for the sixth month in a row, wholesale price-based inflation remained in double digits. Wholesale price-based inflation has been in double digits since April. Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), had stood at 7.5 per cent in March.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, prices of mineral oil, basic metals, non-food articles, food products, crude petroleum, natural gas, chemicals and chemical products rose in September 2021.

Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was 11.5 per cent in August 2012. It was 1.2 per cent in September, 2020. Food inflation fell for the fifth month in a row. Food prices fell by 4.5 per cent in September. Food prices fell by 1.5 per cent in August 2011. Vegetables became dearer, while pulses became dearer by 4.8 per cent, eggs, meat and fish by 2.15 per cent.

In September 2021, prices of vegetables declined by 2.4 per cent, onions by 1.41 per cent and potatoes by 2.8 per cent. However, in September 2031, fuel and electricity prices rose by 2.31 per cent. In August, 2021, the prices of these two had gone up by 2.08 per cent.

Inflation in crude petroleum and natural gas rose to 7.5 per cent in September 2011 and 20.05 per cent in August, 2011.
