Sagira's rape-murder accused sentenced to death within a month


The special court set a precedent by giving a speedy judgment

Jaipur: A special POSCO court in Merta town in Rajasthan's Nagaur district on Friday sentenced an accused to death for raping and killing 8-year-old Sagira. The verdict comes a month after the crime was committed. Special Court Judge Rekha Rathore said the crime was brutal and showed the brutal instinct of the accused.

Keeping him alive puts him at risk of committing more such crimes in the future. The court found the accused Dinesh guilty under various sections of the IPC and POSCO Act and fined him Rs. A fine of Rs 2 lakh was slapped. Dinesh was also given another sentence on charges of kidnapping the girl and keeping her in bondage illegally.

The judge said in his judgment that it is worrying that children in our society are not safe at home as well as outside the home. The protection of children has become a challenging task for parents and those responsible for such brutal crimes are a disgrace to society.

The crime took place on September 20 when accused Dinesh, who knew the victim, took him to the market and committed the heinous crime. Police arrested the accused the very next day and filed a chargesheet against him on September 27. The special judge heard the case for 11 consecutive days and delivered the verdict.
