Mundra Port Drugs case: Raids at several NIA locations in Delhi


The seized 2988 kg of heroin was valued at Rs. 21 thousand crore

Authorities also raided several places in Chennai, Coimbatore and Vijayawada

New Delhi: National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials on Tuesday raided several places in the capital in connection with an ongoing probe into 2988 kilograms of heroin seized from Gujarat's Mundra port recently, a government official said. A search operation is currently underway at five places in Delhi and Noida.

Following the order of the Union Home Ministry, NIA officials took over the investigation of the case from the Revenue Intelligence Department and registered a complaint under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and immediately carried out raids.

The case relates to the recent seizure of 2988 kg of heroin from Mundra port in Gujarat and some foreign nationals who smuggled it into India, an NIA official said. It may be mentioned here that on September 13, a ship took off from the Iranian port of Abbas and anchored at the Mundro port in Gujarat, out of which two large containers were unloaded at the port.

According to the Central Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, 2988 kilograms of heroin was found in the two containers. The declaration submitted for this container stated that it contained talcum powder. In fact, the drug first reached the Iranian port from Kandahar in Afghanistan and from there it reached Mundra in Gujarat.
