Japan's parliament elects Fumio Kishida as new prime minister

Suga and his cabinet resigned

Challenges to Kishida, including the corona virus, improving relations with China-Russia

TOKYO: Japan's parliament has elected former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida as its new prime minister. Kishida is facing the challenge of getting out of the corona virus before the national election with a global epidemic and threats like China and Russia. Kishida has taken the place of Yoshihide Suga.

Suga and his cabinet resigned this morning. Suga has resigned after a year in office following a decline in popularity due to the Corona virus's way of fighting the global epidemic and its insistence on hosting the Olympics despite the transition.

Former Japanese Foreign Minister Kishida won last week's election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. She defeated two women candidates Sana Takaichi and Seiko Noida in the first round of elections. His victory proves that he had the support of the party's veteran leaders.

Kishida is known as a quiet and liberal leader. However he has created the image of an aggressive leader in order to gain the support of influential conservatives. According to media reports, all but two of the 20 members of Sugani's cabinet will be handed over to new leaders.
