In the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Congress will give 40 per cent tickets to women

The party's new strategy to rediscover the lost mass base in the state

Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi made the announcement but did not say whether she would contest

Lucknow: Facing the daunting task of finding its lost base in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress on Tuesday announced that it would field 40 per cent women candidates in next year's Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The announcement was made by the party's general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who is in charge of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, at a press conference here today. Priyanka said her party's intention in fielding 50 per cent of the total voters in the state was to make women equal partners in power.

The Congress has been out of power in Uttar Pradesh for the last two decades, and its mass base has largely disappeared, so the Congress party has entrusted him with the daunting task of re-establishing the Congress in Uttar Pradesh. Priyanka did not give any assurance in response to the question of 56 cars that you will contest the Assembly elections yourself.

The party has not yet taken a decision on the issue, he said in an indirect reply to a direct question from reporters. It may be recalled that in the 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress had won only seven seats in the 403-seat assembly, but now the party has relied heavily on women to get the party back in the seat.

"Our party has promised to give tickets to 40 per cent women candidates in next year's state assembly elections. If I had all the power in my hands, I would have given tickets to 50 per cent women candidates," she said.

"There is no hidden motive behind the decision. We want to bring women fully into politics so that they become equal partners in power," she added. Priyanka's announcement sparked a wave of happiness among the women and activists outside the party office here erupted in fireworks to applaud her decision.
