1.2 lakh people committed suicide in the country in 2020

New Delhi, Dt
According to the latest figures from the central government in India, 1.2 lakh people committed suicide in the year 2020, including 10.7 lakh farmers and farm laborers. Thus, an average of 212 people committed suicide daily, the NCRB report said. The number of suicides and accidental deaths released last year shows a sharp decline in road accidents and related deaths, while the number of suicides has risen sharply. The death toll from suicides has risen sharply among students (21.5 per cent) and small business owners.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 1,5,08 people committed suicide in the year 2020, a significant increase compared to 1,8,14 in 2015. The report, which covers the period from January to December 2020, shows that the 10 per cent increase in the number of suicides last year is the largest growth in 12 years. In the year 2020, 11.5 people per 10 lakh population committed suicide, which is the highest rate in the last 10 years. The last time 11.5 people per 10 lakh population committed suicide was in 2010. In 2015, the suicide rate per lakh people was 10.4.
Most of those who committed suicide last year were students and small businesses. The Koro epidemic has hit the education sector hardest, as schools and colleges have not been able to reopen even after a three-day lockdown that began in March 2020. The proportion of students committing suicide each year is 6 to 8 per cent, which rose to 31.5 per cent in the Corona year of 2020. Students are followed by suicides by professionals or salaried employees (12.5 per cent) and day laborers (12.5 per cent).
In addition, the report shows that small traders were hit harder than salaried traders during the Coronation Period. As a result, the suicide rate among vendors and tradesmen was 7.1 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively. These figures show that persistent problems in education and financial losses due to the Koro epidemic have had a widespread impact in India.
According to the report, 4 per cent of people in the country committed suicide due to poverty and 5 per cent due to unemployment, with the highest increase being in the country. In addition, 18 percent committed suicide due to drug or alcohol addiction, 18 percent due to illness and 19 percent due to family problems. The cause of suicide among students is believed to be due to long-term factors such as inability to continue studies rather than examination. Failure to appear for exams has led to a 4% drop in student suicides, but professional or career-related problems have led to an 11% rise in student suicides.
According to the NCRB report, the five states have the highest suicide rates, with Maharashtra accounting for 12,308, Tamil Nadu for 12.5, Madhya Pradesh for 12.5, West Bengal for 12,108 and Karnataka for 12.5. Out of the total suicides in the country, 20.1 per cent were reported in these five states while the remaining nine states and eight Union Territories recorded 7.5 per cent. Uttar Pradesh, which has the highest population of 12.5 per cent of the total population, had a suicide rate of only 2.1 per cent. A total of 4.5 suicides were reported in the country's 3 mega cities.
