Wholesale inflation rises to 11.5 per cent in August on rising manufacturing prices

Wholesale price-based inflation rose to 11.5 per cent in August. Wholesale price index (WPI) inflation rose in August on account of lower food prices.

August has seen a rise in wholesale price-based inflation again after falling for two consecutive months. However, for the fifth month in a row, inflation has been in double digits.

Inflation based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) was 11.12 per cent in July 2011. Inflation was 0.31 per cent in August, 2010.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) said in a statement that the rise in prices of non-food items, mineral oil, crude petroleum and natural gas, manufactured items such as basic metals, food products, textiles, chemicals and chemicals has led to an increase in wholesale inflation in August 2011.

Food inflation fell for the fourth month in a row. Food prices fell 1.2 per cent in August. Food inflation was 0 per cent in July.

Onion prices rose by 7.5 per cent in August 2012. Pulses became dearer by 2.21 per cent. Prices of vegetables declined by 12.5 per cent in August. Crude petroleum and natural gas prices rose by 20.05 per cent.

Retail inflation figures were released yesterday. According to the data released yesterday, retail inflation stood at 7.5 per cent in August 2011.
