'Rose' hurricane landfall today, orange alert issued, heavy rains in Odisha-Bengal

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a hurricane named Gulab is likely to hit the coastal areas of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening. In the midst of all this the intensity of the hurricane has increased and the Yellow Alert has been updated to the Orange Alert.

According to Umashankar Das, a senior meteorologist at the meteorological department, a hurricane warning has been issued in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The rose storm will land near Kalingapatnam in the coastal areas of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening. During this time the wind can blow at a speed of 70-80 km per hour.

The Orange Alert warns of moderate to heavy rain. In the midst of all this the deep depression in the north-west and the adjoining West-Central Bay of Bengal increased almost to the west so that the rose storm became brighter.

Heavy rains are expected in West Bengal due to the Rose Storm. East Midnapore along with Kolkata, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas are forecast to receive heavy rains from Tuesday. Kolkata Police has opened a control room called Unified Command Center to deal with the hurricane.
