Relying on Superstition to Overcome Drought
The National Commission for Child Rights sought a report from the District Collector, ordering an inquiry
Bhopal: In a village in Madhya Pradesh, six minors were forced to beg naked. Due to the lack of rain here, the superstitious villagers turned the young women naked and turned them into villagers. The villagers claim that doing so will make Indradev happy and it will rain.
The incident took place in Damoh district of Bundelkhand province in Madhya Pradesh. Six underage girls from the village were stripped naked to bring rain to Bania village and later begged for flour, vegetables, pulses etc. from them in the village. The young women went to every house and collected these things. These items were later given to the village treasury, which was prepared by the villagers for healing.
The villagers claimed that the ritual was performed to impress the god of rain and alleviate the drought. The incident was reported to the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights and a report was sought from the Sruthanik District Collector. Currently, the district collector has ordered an inquiry into the whole matter and clarified that a report will be handed over to anyone who comes forward.
