By-elections for seven Rajya Sabha seats in six states on October 4

The Election Commission today announced by-elections for seven Rajya Sabha seats. These seven seats fell vacant due to reasons such as resignation, death and expiration of term.

According to the notification issued by the Election Commission, there are two seats in Tamil Nadu, one in West Bengal, one in Assam, one in Maharashtra, one in Puducherry and one in Madhya Pradesh.

According to the Election Commission, elections for these seven seats will be held on October 4. The Rajya Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh has fallen vacant due to the appointment of Thavarchand Gehlot as the Governor of Karnataka.

In Tamil Nadu, two AIADMK leaders, KP Munusami and Aar Vathilingam, have resigned, leaving two seats vacant. In West Bengal, the Rajya Sabha seat has fallen vacant following the resignation of Trinamool leader and cabinet minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia.

In Assam, a Rajya Sabha seat has fallen vacant following the resignation of Biswajit Dimeri. In Assam, the BJP is likely to give a Rajya Sabha ticket to Nrbananda Sonowal as he is not yet a member of either house. A Rajya Sabha seat in Puducherry is set to become vacant due to the expiration of N Gokulakrishnan's term.
