New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday convened a virtual (online) meeting to formulate a common strategy against the Centre's Narendra Modi government, in which NCP chief minister Sharad Pawar and several state chief ministers are expected to participate, sources said.

Sonia Gandhi's office has also sent invitations to NCP leader Sharad Pawar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to attend the meeting. All these leaders have also accepted Sonia Gandhi's invitation, sources said.

Friday is August 20 and is also the birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, so Sonia Gandhi is believed to have called the meeting on Friday. All the opposition parties are trying to come up with a common strategy to defeat the BJP in the forthcoming elections and address some of the country's burning issues, as part of which the meeting has been called.

During the recent monsoon session of Parliament, several parties showed strong solidarity in holding a debate on the Pegasus espionage scandal and slammed the government in Parliament. Apart from that, the parties also showed strong unity on the issue of laws that harm farmers.
