Mamata's troubles escalate: There are only 71 days left to save the chair

Mamata has to be elected as MLA, but the Election Commission is not holding by-elections.

New Delhi: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who came to power with an overwhelming majority in West Bengal, is facing increasing difficulties as she has only 71 days left to defend her seat. He will have to resign from the post of Chief Minister if he cannot become an MLA from any of the Assembly constituencies in West Bengal in the next 71 days.

In view of these circumstances, the Trinamool Congress on Thursday visited the Election Commission once again and demanded immediate by-elections in the state. It is mandatory for Mamata Banerjee to be elected as MLA by November 5 to remain the Chief Minister.

A delegation led by Trinamool Congress leader Saugat Roy visited the Election Commission and filed an application seeking early by-elections in West Bengal. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders had earlier twice petitioned for timely by-elections in West Bengal.

Besides, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also publicly demanded by-elections in the state without delay. "We have filed an application seeking by-polls as soon as possible in seven assembly constituencies in West Bengal," Roy said after a meeting with the Election Commission.

Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress came to power in West Bengal for the third time in a row but lost the Nandigram assembly seat to the party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against the BJP leader and her old ally Shubhendu Adhikari by a narrow margin. It has become mandatory to get elected.

According to the provisions of the Constitution, a person can be appointed as a Minister or Chief Minister even if he is not a member of the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council, but he must become a member of either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council within six months of his appointment.
