It is the duty of society to provide an opportunity of defense to the offender: Supreme Court

New Delhi: Supreme Court Judge Yuu Lalit has said that it is the duty of every member of a well-organized society to provide every possible opportunity to the offender to escape.

He said that even if an offender is booked and punished for his misdeeds, legal representation is a constitutional right of every citizen.

He was speaking on the occasion of the year-long campaign for justice organized by the Haryana Legal Service Authority at Gurugram in Haryana. He said that for the last one and a half years, when the entire mankind has been on the backfoot due to Kovid-12, the virtual platform has emerged as a platform of solution.

He said that after all sorts of interactions, whether it was in public offices or elsewhere, entertainment and all other matters have come to a standstill because of Corona. However, this kind of situation has given us the opportunity to improve ourselves, to think in a new way and to work in a new way and to bring out the best in us.

Because of this we have started using virtual platforms as a platform of solutions. Through it we have been able to solve many difficulties. Today all courts run in virtual mode, he noted.

He also inaugurated 22 DLSAs (District Legal Services Authorities) in the state. DLSA is an interactive platform that bridges the communication gap between Legal Aid Counsel and the client.
