TOKYO: Gujarat's para-table tennis player Bhavina Patel has made a name for herself in the Indian sports world by winning a historic silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Bhavina gave India its first silver medal in Paralympic table tennis this morning. Later in the evening, Indian para-high jumper Nishad Kumar bagged a silver medal equal to his own Asian record. In the discus throw, India's Vinod Kumar won the bronze medal.

With this, India celebrated Major Dhyana Chand's 116th birthday on National Sports Day with two silver and one bronze medal in the Paralympics with a total of three medals. However, the medal was postponed in protest of Vinod Kumar's classification of paralysis.

Bhavina, a Gujarat para-table tennis player, was congratulated by politicians and celebrities including President Ramnath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Gujarat government had announced a prize of Rs 3 crore for Bhavina's historic Silver Achievement. The National Table Tennis Federation also announced a grant of Rs 31 lakh to Bhavina.

Bhavina Patel, who had beaten world number two and three in the category 4 women's singles in Tokyo, lost 0-3 to China's world number one Zhou Ying in the final today.

Zhou Ying won gold in the C-4 category singles event for the third time since 2008 and 2012. In the final, he won in just 19 minutes. Indian para-high jumper Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the T47 category high jump final with a jump of 2.06 meters, equaling his own Asian record. Dallas Wise of America also won the joint silver by clearing a height of 2.06 meters.

Roderick Townsend-Roberts of the United States won the gold medal with a world record of 2.15 meters. India's Vinod Kumar won the bronze medal in the discus throw F52 category event with a distance of 19.91 meters. Piotr Koseviz of Poland won the gold with a distance of 20.02 meters and Valimir Sandor of Croatia won the bronze medal with a distance of 19.98 meters.

At the Tokyo Paralympics, Bhavina Patel won the historic silver medal in para table tennis. Along with this, people at his Sundhiya village in Mehsana district celebrated with pride. Following Bhavina's achievement, a festive atmosphere was witnessed in the village and people hugged each other and firecrackers were also set off. Bhavina's father Hasmukh Patel said, "We never consider him paralyzed." It is divine to us.
