Historic: Nine new judges of CJI NV Ram to be sworn in in Supreme Court today

The 9 newly appointed judges in the Supreme Court will be sworn in today by CJI NV Ramna. This is the first time such a large swearing-in ceremony will be held. The nine new judges include three women judges. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Supreme Court building complex.

This will be the first time in the history of the Supreme Court that nine judges will be sworn in simultaneously. The new judge is usually sworn in at the Chief Justice's courtroom. Following the swearing in of nine new judges on Tuesday, the number of judges in the Supreme Court, including CJI NV Ramna, will increase to 33 while the sanctioned number is 34.

The nine new judges who have been sworn in as Supreme Court judges include Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice BV Nagaratna, Justice M. Navrati, Justice M.

Justice Nagaratna is in the queue to become the first woman CJI in September 2027. Justice Nagaratna is the daughter of former CJI ES Venkataramaiah. Of the nine new judges, three Justices Nath, Nagaratna and Narasimha are in the queue to become CJI.

The collegium, headed by CJI NV Ramana, approved the names of nine new judges at a meeting on August 17. At the same time, the 21-month stalemate over the appointment of a new judge to the Supreme Court came to an end. Due to this stalemate, not a single new judge has been appointed to the Supreme Court since 2019. The stalemate lasted forever after the departure of the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi on 17 November 2019.
