The dispute between the country's two northeastern states of Assam and Mizoram is not going away. Mizoram Chief Minister Joramthanga said in the wake of last week's violent clash with Assam that Assam police had earlier taken control of the Mizoram police outpost. Assam police then fired tear gas shells, shells and baton-charged at the locals.

He said that in a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 24, he had decided to resolve the issue peacefully and both the chief ministers had agreed to it. But on July 26, 200 Assam police personnel occupied a Mizoram police outpost. It is not right if one policeman tries to occupy another police outpost.

This is how the collision started

He said that when the Assam police took possession of the outpost, the Mizoram police went to talk to the Assam commander. At that time the locals came down with sticks. Assam police fired tear gas shells at him and charged him with batons. Police even used light machine guns on people.

He further said that Assam police was firing so Mizoram police also used their full strength. The SP of Mizoram could barely save his life during the firing. 2 people from Mizoram were also injured.

Chief Minister Joramthanga further said that sadly, just two days after the meeting with the Home Minister in Shillong, Assam Police carried out three attacks in Mizoram, Arunachal and Meghalaya in just one day. The Assam government is in charge of illegal drug and animal trafficking but their argument is not valid. According to him, Assam and Mizoram have decided to resolve the issue in a meeting with the home minister.

He said Assam has imposed a blockade against Mizoram. The Central Government should intervene immediately. This should not be another Berlin. He hoped that the central government would intervene in the blockade case.
