New Delhi: Before India became independent on August 15, it was divided into two nations. Terrible riots broke out during this time of partition. Millions of people had to leave their homes, land, goods, property and leave everything as it was. Millions lost their lives. This tragedy of division will never be forgotten. Therefore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that August 15 would be observed as 'Partition Tragedy Memorial Day' every year from now on.

Recalling August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, "The pain of the country's partition can never be forgotten. Millions of our brothers and sisters have been displaced by hate and violence and have lost their lives. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of these people, it has been decided to observe August 15 as 'Partition Tragedy Memorial Day'.

Immediately after Prime Minister Modi's announcement, the Home Ministry on Saturday issued a proclamation to observe August 15 as 'Partition Tragedy Memorial Day', paying tribute to the millions who sacrificed their lives during the partition of the country. Prime Minister Modi said that this day of Partition Tragic Memorial Day will inspire us to eradicate the poison of discrimination, hostility and malice as well as strengthen unity, social harmony and humanitarian sentiments. After the partition of India by the British in 1917, Pakistan became a Muslim country. Millions lost their lives in communal riots during the independence of these two countries.

After the Prime Minister's announcement, the Information and Broadcasting Minister said that the Partition Tragic Memorial Day would be observed as a tribute to the millions of people who were displaced from their homeland due to the partition of the country. This Memorial Day will also remind the countrymen of present and future generations of the pain and suffering suffered by the people during the Partition.

"India celebrates Independence Day on 15th August every year, which is an occasion of joy, exhilaration and pride for any nation," the ministry said. However, with the sweetness of freedom we have also had to endure the trauma of division. The new independent India was born with the violent torments and pain of partition, which has left an indelible mark on the minds of millions of Indians. India has emerged as the world's largest democracy and the world's third largest economy, leaving behind all the pain and suffering, but the pain of partition will never be forgotten.
