In Bihar, a dispute has erupted between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi over population control. When asked on Monday about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's advocacy for a population control law, Nitish Kumar said it was more important for women to be educated for population control.

Nitish Kumar said that if women were considered educated, their awareness would be higher and fertility rate would decrease on its own. However, in his own government, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Renu Devi does not agree with Nitish Kumar's view that population control is possible only because women are educated.

Releasing a written statement, Renu Devi said that more awareness is needed for population control. Renu Devi said that men need to be sensitized more than women for population control. He said that there is a great deal of fear among men regarding sterilization for population control.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that in many districts of Bihar, the rate of sterilization is only one per cent. Furthermore, it is often observed that in the hope of having a son, the husband and in-laws put pressure on the woman to have more children so that the family size increases. In his view population control needs to end discrimination between men and women.
