In medical colleges, 8% is reserved for OBCs, 10% for economically backward people

The central government on Thursday announced a landmark decision in the medical field to give 3 per cent reservation to OBC students and 10 per cent to economically backward class (EWS) students. Students studying medical will be given the benefit of anatam under the All India quota. On the occasion of completing one year of reforms in the new education policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his national address on Thursday said that under the new education policy, engineering studies in five Indian languages ​​would be started in 18 engineering colleges in eight states.

Ending the long-running debate on reserves in the medical field across the country, the central government has finally accepted the demands of medical students. All India Medical Quota will be implemented in medical or dental courses from undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) courses i.e. MBBS, MD, MS, BDS, MDS, Diploma courses from academic session 2021-2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced the reservation through his Twitter account.

He tweeted, "Our government has taken a historic decision from the current academic year to provide 3% reservation for OBCs and 10% reservation for economically backward classes in the All India Quota Scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate medical-dental courses." He further wrote that this decision will go a long way in providing better opportunities to thousands of our youth every year and in creating a new milestone of social justice in our country.

Union Education Minister Mansukh Mandvia also lauded the Prime Minister's announcement, calling it a historic decision. The Prime Minister on Monday directed the Union Ministers to find an effective solution to the long-running issue, the health ministry said. As the All India Quota Scheme is a central scheme, the castes included in the Centre's list of OBCs will benefit from this scheme.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the dates for NEET 2021 on July 15. At the same time, there was no talk of applying reservation for OBCs in the national examination. Students were then demanding reservations and preparing for a nationwide strike. Students have been demanding OBC reservation in medical education for a long time. The Ministry of Health said that the present government is committed to give the benefit of the reserve to both the backward class people as well as the economically backward class people.

In the last six years, the number of MBBS seats in the country has increased from 7.5 to 9 per cent in 2016 to 2.4 in 2020 and PG seats have increased from 20,121 to 20 per cent in 2017 to 2.2 in 2020. At the same time, 18 new medical colleges have been opened in the country. At present there are 3 medical colleges in the country, out of which 4 are government and 3 are private colleges.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of completing one year of reforms under the new National Education Policy 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the new education policy has been kept free from all kinds of pressures. The same freedom that is at the policy level is also given to the students in the options. Institutions alone cannot decide how much students will study for some time now.

He also said that under the new education policy, 15 engineering colleges in eight states would start teaching engineering in five regional languages ​​including Hindi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali. A tool has also been developed for translating engineering courses into 11 Indian languages. India's new national education policy is one of the major factors in nation building.

The All India Quota Scheme was introduced in the year 19 under the direction of the Supreme Court to enable talented students from any state to get admission in a good medical college in any state. The All India quota includes a total of 12 per cent reservation for undergraduate seats in government medical colleges and 30 per cent reservation for postgraduate seats. Until 2006, there was no reservation in the All India Quota Scheme. But in 2008, the apex court had reserved 15 per cent for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Benefit to 200 students of OBC, EWS

The government's decision on reserves in the medical education sector will benefit an estimated 500 students annually, including about 1,200 OBCs in MBBS, 200 OBC students in postgraduate and about 40 in MBBS, and about 1,000 EWS students in postgraduate.

Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the Academic Bank of Credit, which will provide many admission and export options for students in the field of higher education. It will also issue guidelines for the internationalization of first-year engineering programs and higher education in regional languages.
