Demand for petrol and diesel rose in June amid skyrocketing prices

In India, petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing and in 16 states, petrol is priced at Rs. Demand for petrol and diesel rose by 1.5 per cent to 12 million tonnes in June as lockdowns and restrictions were lifted in several states.

According to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, consumption of petrol and diesel increased by 1.6 per cent year-on-year and 8 per cent in May 2012 due to increase in economic activity and mobility due to lockdown and deregulation in various states.

In June, petrol sales grew by 7.5 per cent year-on-year to 3 lakh tonnes. In May, petrol sales stood at 12.5 lakh tonnes. Diesel consumption, the most widely used fuel in the country, rose by 12 per cent to 5 lakh tonnes in June from 2.4 lakh tonnes in May 2021. However, diesel consumption declined by 1.2 per cent in June 2020 and 12.5 per cent in June 2017. Consumption of petrol and diesel has increased for the first time since March.
